Only Music In The Building: True Crime

Watch the series on Hulu!

The setting for the series is established through the monologue of Charles Hayden-Savage, played by Steve Martin. The story takes place in Manhattan at the Arconia. This monologue is accompanied by Jan and Dean’s song, Manhattan. I don’t think there’s any deeper significance although the thought of a New York themed song in the style of surf music hurts my head a little.

The character of Mabel Mora, played by Selena Gomez, is established next using the energetic Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa. Around the time this episode premiered, Dua Lipa’s music was getting a lot of exposure on the social platform, TikTok during the pandemic lockdowns. It could be seen as an anthem for socializing from a distance.

Oliver Putnam, played by Martin Short, is introduced next. How appropriate that his introduction is paired with You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile as Oliver screams “theatre background”. It also could allude to the optimistic artifice all three characters yearn to embrace.

Debussy’s Clair de Lune is referenced by Oliver, having seen it on the ‘world wide web’. This piece is often seen paired with overly saccharine reveries. Below you can hear the piece, played by the composer, in a different light. More playful and rhythmically brisk. It makes a reprise later when all three main characters have found purpose together to further investigate and create their own podcast together.

Playing over the closing credits is Daniel Johnston’s Don’t Be Scared. Daniel long battled with manic depression yet expressed incredible innocence and optimism through his self made music and artwork. Learn more about him here. Like the characters in our story, finding grace and optimism in the shadow of Only Murders In The Building.
